Much of this put me in mind of C. S. Lewis' writings on faith - from memory he also discusses that sense of spirituality creeping up on him, & looking over his shoulder at it rather reluctantly as a professed atheist, when writing about his conversion/adulthood-return to the church. I believe Tolkien was annoyed that Lewis eventually went and became a Protestant rather than a Catholic! Certainly personally relate to that sense of the 'hole' - think our current moment in history really lends itself to that. Thanks for sharing. Much to think about!
Yes interesting - I haven't read Lewis for a long time but he's a constant presence in the Re-Enchanting podcast which I find endlessly interesting on this subject. Thanks for reading x
Oh this was lovely! Big questions indeed. I like how Garner leaves it there. Can a question about the force be enough? Or does it need an answer and a name? I love Ecclesiastes but that about does it for me. Good novels, yes. Hmm. Good luck in the search, thanks for sharing this!
There are days when for no apparent reason everything goes right and others when I should have stayed in bed. My introduction to the Force was Star Wars. Then I started following Iain M Banks and his take on where homosapiens are heading. Now I marvel at the rise and rise of men like Hitler and Trump. Their names are so imprinted on everyone on the planet's mind they generate an amost physical force. Kiwi actors Bob Jones and Muldoon had this through media manipulation locally. Music and sporting idols also - not a good outlook for the future of the species there when machines and robots can do both with their eyes shut while our brains are being programmed and atrophied by the small device we rely on in our pocket for AI.
In short then, I do not believe in a god or in any church. But I am aware that there is something beyond our ken. For example and I'll stop here! The home game advantage where the local team somehow come up with miracle plays to win against the odds. Let's hope that works for Auckland FC this weekend.
PS the Neutrino experiment just now on TV news tonight about the creation of our expanding universe might also resolve the big question that so bothered Stephen Hawkins

Thanks for reading Dan! Suspect the force / beast might remain enigmatic to me too
